6 Step Autumn Lawncare Workout
Giving a little loving attention to your lawn after it’s endured the rigours of Summer will make all the difference next Spring. Here’s our essential guide to your Autumn Lawn Work-Out:
- Keep mowing the lawn as per usual! The grass cuttings will make excellent composting material along with other material such as fallen leaves.
Exercise 2: Getting rid of the debris
- Rake out the moss and other debris left over from the season such as dead grass or trefoil. Your lawn may look a little patchy afterwards, but it will soon recover.
- We recommend Yeoman's Rolling Lawn Scarifier which has an extendable handle to make the job even easier
Exercise 3: Spike the lawn
- Use an aerator or garden fork to spike the lawn especially in those areas where the lawn has been subjected to wear and tear. This not only lets the grass breathe, getting oxygen to the roots, but it also alleviates compaction of the ground. Aim for spikes 8-10cm deep every foot or so over the grass, more in trouble spots.

Exercise 4: Give the grass some tonic
- In the Autumn months lawns need a special lawn feed. So whilst you may think you can use up your Spring lawn feed, unfortunately you’ll have to think again. The reason is both feeds serve two different purposes. The Autumn feed gives the grass a long-term shot in the arm to help it get through the winter months, whilst Spring feed is a pick-me-up designed to promote rapid growth with the onet of warmer weather.
Exercise 5: The icing on the Lawn
- Top-dressing your lawn is really for those lovers of a fine lawn. However it does serve a purpose for those lawns on soils with poor nutrient levels, such as clay, chalk or sand. Merely apply a thin layer of sifted topsoil or compost at any one time. For best results make your own mix of topsoil, compost and sand and apply using one of our wooden garden riddles.
Exercise 6: Bald is not beautiful
- Now’s the time to sort out those annoying bald patches on the lawn. These are easily fixed by scruffing up the soil with the prongs of a fork and sprinkling grass seed thinly over the top. Ideally you can also apply a layer of seed compost to ensure rapid establishment. Keep well watered in dry spells.
