Young growers ready to plant petunias

Hundreds of school pupils across Worcestershire are being invited to put their green-fingered skills to the test in a special schools' growing competition with Webbs Garden Centre at Wychbold.

In previous years more than 1,000 youngsters have signed up with their schools to take part in the competition and it is hoped to prove just as popular this year. Webbs is providing the plants, pots, compost and gardening tips for the youngsters to grow their own bright blue Petunia Easywave.

Everything needed for the competition - plants, pots, compost and growing guildelines - will be provided absolutely free. He added, "We already carry out some annual planting in these schemes but we thought it would be a great idea for the tenants to use this opportunity to plant extra tubs, planters and hanging baskets. The Petunias will be planted by the tenants themselves with Where Next planting some areas in the town. We are really grateful to Webbs for supporting us in such a generous way in this year's campaign."

Redditch was awarded a Silver Gilt for its last year's Heart of England in Bloom campaign.

Pupils bench mark on biodiversity
Pupils from 14 local schools are taking up the green challenge to decorate a garden bench on a biodiversity theme, ready to go on display at the Malvern Spring Gardening Show in May.

The wooden benches have been generously donated by Webbs Garden Centres and pupils are busy coming up with their designs.

The schools' project is part of a bid by the Show organisers to drive home the biodiversity message this year in an attempt to encourage British gardeners to do their bit for the greater good of the planet.
For the first time ever, the Malvern Spring Gardening show (12 - 15 May) is dedicating its entire theatre programme to the subject of conserving the natural environment and will be showing green fingered visitors how small changes in the way they garden can make a significant impact on local, and ultimately global, diversity.

Sharon Gilbert, Press & PR Manager for the Showground said, " We are very grateful to Webbs for donating the benches to the schools so they can get pupils directly involved in this exciting biodiversity theme. It might be small scale but it all contributes to the global effort and events like ours must get behind the initiative, keep up the momentum and promote the message to as many people as possible."

Triumph for Plant Advisor

A Worcestershire mum has turned redundancy to triumph through her love of garden design.
Linda Carless-James, who works at Webbs Garden Centre in Wychbold, was made redundant from the banking sector but decided to use the time to train in something she was passionate about - gardening and art.

Linda, from Kidderminster, said,  "As a 40-something mum of three teenage sons, this was a daunting prospect. But I have always had a love of gardening and art, therefore it seemed ideal to pursue a career in garden design."

In September 2008 she bagan and HNC Garden Design Course at Pershore Horticultural College and to help her studies Linda started working at the award-winning Webbs, Wychbold. Last year Linda was awarded her HNC in Garden Design with a Distinction.

Now her perseverance has paid off and Linda has won a competition run by the Cottage Garden Society to design an exhibition garden for the RHS Malvern Spring Show 2011.

She has also launched her own website www.lcjgardendesigns.com and designs from home whilst remaining at Webbs as a Plant Advisor.

Linda explained, "It's essential to keep up to date with the current trends and horticultural advances which working at Webbs affords me. I was thrilled to win the competition and will work with the Cottage Garden Society to bring my design to life at the Malvern Show this May.

"In the maintime I am continuing my studies at Pershore on the RHS programme. I have not regretted for a second my new career, who knows where it may lead! The joy about gardening is that there is always something new to learn."

Go potato potty at Webbs spud event

Keen gardeners will have the chance to choose from over 100 different varieties of British potatoes at the Potato Weekend dedicated to the vegetable at Webbs Garden Centre in Wychbold.

The event, on Saturday 5th and Sunday, 6th February, is being championed by the award-winning garden centre which hopes to get more of us growing our own portion of the average 500* potatoes we consume each year.

The event will give budding growers the chance to buy from over 100 different types of seed potatoes, including some organic varieties, meaning that green-fingered gardeners, novice growers, and those inspired to grow their own in 2011 can get growing right away.

Dave Smith from Webbs said, "Many people think the growing season begins in spring - when it actually starts in January - the ideal time to buy seed potatoes and start chitting them!  Most of us have had a go at growing tomatoes or runner beans, but not potatoes, and yet they're one of the easiest and earliest vegetables to grow."

"What's great is they can be grown in all sorts of spaces, so if you have an allotment plot, a veg patch or simple patio pot then you can still give them a go.  What's more, so many people find the taste of home grown, freshly dug spuds a taste hard to beat."

At the event visitors can buy seed potatoes by the tuber or in packs including blight resistant and less common varieties.

Also on the day there will be expert advice from Philip Aubury, former Director of Birmingham Botanical Gardens and horticultural lecturer,  as well as a potato themed restaurant menu and potato painting for children and ramble.

Give a long lasting gift of love this Valentines Day

Lovers are being urged to give their valentine a beautiful red rose - Love Never Dies - and help their local hospices at the same time.

Webbs is donating £1 from the £7.99 purchase price of each of the newly named roses sold this year to be split between the hospices.

Webbs Executive Chairman, Ed Webb, said, " What better way to show your loved one how much you will always care than giving them this beautiful red rose. Rather than cut flowers, which don't last long, the Love Never Dies rose can be planted so will remind you of your love year after year."

The rose is now on sale at Webbs, Wychbold and Webbs, West Hagley and is also available online at www.webbsdirect.co.uk

Judges took into account the range, quality and presentation of the plants and how they are marketed. Webbs is also the GCA Best Garden Centre in the Midlands.

The number one choice of houseplants by customers at Webbs are orchids, with Phalaenopsisis as the best seller. Cyclamen and Poinsettia follow in the top three favourites. Webbs sells thousands of other plants, especially in mixed arrangements for Mother's Day, Easter and Christmas. Foliage are more unusual plants such as bonsai, cacti and insect-eating plants are also popular.

Executive Chairman Ed Webb said the firm is honoured to come out tops. "Plants are at the heart of Webbs and we strive to give our customers top quality, well presented plants which they can enjoy in their homes or give as lovely presents."

Webbs beat around 160 other garden retailers to score the highest. Each year, every GCA garden centre member goes through a very stringent standards audit where independent inspectors arrive unannounced and judge all aspects of their business.
