Conifers
Conifers are easy to grow and come in a variety of shapes and sizes so there will be a conifer suitable for most soil types and locations. They all produce cones, either woody ones or fleshy berry-like ones, and range from large specimen trees to cascading ground cover and fast growing hedges. Conifers are fantastic for creating borders and privacy when kept pruned – just ensure you buy a conifer that won’t outgrow your space, block out too much light or be a nuisance to neighbours. Most types are hardy and evergreen which will add colour and structure to your garden in the winter months. The foliage can be scale-like or short, spiky and needle-like, in various shades of green, blue and yellow plus variegated combinations. Some even take on reddish hues in winter. The best time to plant your conifers is in October and March, and it’s super easy to make new plants by using cutting or seeds.
