HOW TO KEEP YOUR DOG COOL IN SUMMER?

Here are some tips and advice from MacArthur Barstow & Gibbs Veterinary Surgeons

Dogs should never be left in cars, glass conservatories or caravans. If it’s 22C outside, within an hour it can be 47C inside a car.

Provide plenty of water in the house and on walks. Keep an eye on your dog outside, if they’re thirsty they will try to drink anything.

Walks are best in the morning or late evening.

Avoid over-exposure to the sun – use pet sunscreen on ears and noses, provide shade and water

Here our easy guide to spotting sunstroke in your dog
  Heavy panting
  Profuse salivation
  Rapid pulse
  Very red gums or tongue
  Lethargy
  Lack of coordination
  Vomiting
  Diarrhoea

If your dog is displaying any of these symptoms take immediate action. Cool it down gradually by dousing it in cool water (not cold) and let it drink small quantities of cool water, until its breathing has steadied. Go straight to the vets, heatstroke can be fatal.
