Seasonal Bedding
Seasonal bedding is extremely versatile and will provide a beautiful temporary seasonal display for beds, borders, containers and hanging baskets. There are a few ways you can begin your bedding; grow from seed, buy young seedlings also known as plug plants, or purchase pot-grown specimens ready for planting. Bedding plants are usually divided into categories which helps with the easy planning and growing of seasonal flower and foliage colour. Half-hardy annuals are frost-tender and complete their life-cycle in one season (cosmos, nemesia, marigolds, fuchsia). Hardy annuals are sown directly into the soil in spring. They withstand frosty conditions without protection (pot marigold, sunflower, poppy). Hardy biennials complete their life-cycle in two seasons (hollyhock, sweet william, wallflower, foxglove, forget-me-not). Half-hardy perennials live for several years, usually flowering from the second season. Frost-tender, yet they can be overwintered if given frost protection (daisy, begonia, geranium, lobelia). Bulbs can be mixed with biennial bedding plants to give combinations of colour in the early spring months. Try dahlia, crocus, hyacinth, and tulips.
