Get your gardening gloves ready for our much-loved Charity Dahlia Dig Up Days at Flora Fields, Wychbold.
This hands-on event is a wonderful opportunity to dig up your favourite dahlia tubers / plants straight from our flower field – in support of St Richard’s Hospice, which provides compassionate care to adults with serious illnesses and their loved ones.
With more than 60 beautiful dahlia varieties to choose from, you can dig up and take home your chosen plants for just £5 per tuber, to be stored over the winter. Every penny from tuber sales will be donated directly to St. Richard’s Hospice. Payment is taken upon exit (cash and card accepted).
Our knowledgeable horticultural team will be on hand to share expert tips and advice on lifting, storing and caring for dahlias – helping you get the best from your blooms next season.
This event is perfect for garden enthusiasts, flower lovers, and anyone keen to support a wonderful local cause. Enjoy a day of fresh air and community spirit – and take home your own little piece of Flora Fields.
Admission is £2 per person, for a one-hour session, between 10:00 am –
3:00 pm.
Please note: By mid-November, we will have likely had a first frost, so all the flowers will have gone, and the foliage and stems will look blackened. We will keep signage up for each row so you can identify the varieties and choose which tubers you’d like to dig up, but the flowers themselves will no longer be visible.
What to Expect:
You will be digging up your own dahlia plants (tubers and stems/foliage) – it’s rewarding, hand-on work but can be quite physical and muddy, so please come prepared!
What to Bring:
-
Full-size garden spade or fork – trowels won’t be enough for the heavy digging.
-
Secateurs - to cut down foliage, making plants easier to lift and transport.
-
Strong containers - such as crates, buckets, or garden sacks (avoid bin liners).
-
Labels, string, and a pen - to tag your tubers as you go; they all look alike once lifted!
-
Practical clothing and footwear - wellies or boots and gardening gloves are essential! A raincoat is also advised, as the weather can be unpredictable and the field is open with no cover.
-
Wheelbarrow - if you plan to dig up multiple tubers.
Guidance on storing and protecting your dahlias over the winter will be available on the day, and a leaflet will be provided for you to take home.
