Description
Why we love it:
  • Cirsium rivulare 'Atropurpureum' is a wonderful choice for growing towards the back of a sunny herbaceous border, and works well when planted among grasses and other tall perennials
  • It is known for attracting bees, beneficial insects, birds, butterflies/moths and other pollinators. It has nectar pollen rich flowers and has seeds for birds if you leave the plants intact after flowering
  • It has the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM)

What you need to know:
  • Plant Type: Deciduous, upright, hardy perennial
  • Flowers: Deep purple thistles in July and August
  • Height: 1-1.5m (3-5’)
  • Spread: 0.1-0.5m (4-20’’)
  • Position: Full sun
  • Soil Type: Moist, well drained, loam, chalk or sand

Caring for your plant:
  • Propagate by seed sown in pots in a cold frame in spring or propagate by division in spring or autumn
  • If self-seeding is a problem then cut back hard after flowering
