Grasses & Ferns

Ornamental Ferns and Grasses are ideal for "filling in". They provide texture that enhances floral displays or, on their own, add a contemporary look. Grasses provide structural elements in a garden and can be happy in positions that other plants don't do well in. Ferns will thrive in shady spots that are tricky to fill.

Grasses & Ferns
Grasses and Ferns make a fantastic addition to any garden, providing structure and filling in gaps such as shady areas that other plants won’t do well in. Grasses generally prefer sunny well drained spots. Adaptable and reliable plants, they can be easily cultivated in sun or shade and some can even thrive in both. Ideally Grasses will be planted in well-drained soil, but some will grow happily in moist or wet soil. Ferns come in all sorts of forms, leaf shapes and textures. For example, there are evergreen and deciduous types which lose their leaves in winter, ferns for damp soils, and ferns for dry soils such as those found under trees. Fern fronds have a graceful texture, and look sublime when combined with big shiny leaf plants, or narrow, grassy plants. Ferns will generally do well in dry shade and their hardiness makes taking care of outdoor ferns so simple you may often forget they are there. Few pests will bother your ferns other than the passing slug, which will devour nearly anything. In the early spring when they become too large, you can divide them.
