- Flowering mid-Spring and commonly known as snakes head fritillary, Fritillaria meleagris is a woodland bulb which grows as a multicoloured mix of pure white and white-checkered reddish-purple nodding bells, with the patterns resembling snake skin
- This species is native to Europe and West Russia where its bulbs usually grow in very moist locations
- It's the perfect bulb for naturalising through grass where it will quickly form large colonies but it does need a location where the soil does not dry out in summer
