Why we love it:Jekka's Herbs Angelica is part of a new range of herbs from Johnsons Seeds in association with Jekka McVicar Jekka is considered to be the UK's leading herb expert, not only by top chefs but by horticulturalists too. As well as growing herbs she writes and broadcasts about them too Angelica archangelica is a beautiful statuesque herb to grow at the back of a border It's a hardy biennial herb which produces round umbels of sweetly scented flowers in the early summer of the second year From the culinary perspective it has a number of uses - young succulent leaves may be used in salads, and the stems can be candied and added to ice creams or fruit salads and used to decorate cakes or to make a tea. Angelica is also a natural sweetener; try adding it to rhubarb to reduce the amount of sugar required Angelica also has valuable medicinal uses. Once known as the 'herb of the angels' it was believed to be a remedy against witchcraft, poison and plague. It aids digestion and may be taken as an indigestion remedy
