A PINCH OF (GOURMET) SALT

After almost a century, the world’s first and only known salt made from pure brine springs, has once again started production as Droitwich Salt.  Churchfields Saltworks, near Droitwich, has launched a unique and naturally delicious gourmet salt, perfect for foodies and chefs alike.

Since 1825 salt from Droitwich has been celebrated and recognised worldwide for its great purity, but sadly ceased production in 1922.

The brine springs have naturally existed beneath Droitwich Spa for millions of years. It was an internationally valuable resource in Roman, Anglo Saxon and Norman Times and King John granted the town a Royal Charter in 1215 based on the importance of its brine.

Droitwich Spa was subsequently one of the most prosperous towns in Medieval Times right through to the 20th Century. In the mid-19th Century Droitwich Salt won international recognition and was awarded a ‘Premier Class No 41’ designation.

The crystal-clear brine is ten times saltier than sea water, with only the waters of the Dead Sea equalling it in concentration. Droitwich Salt is believed to be the purest salt available as it has never been subject to any form of pollution and is therefore inherently 100% natural.

Thankfully local family farm, Churchfields, decided to revive what is arguably the oldest and purest salt springs in the world, and recently opened a new saltworks to bring back the salt as a delicious artisan seasoning to rival the other gourmet salts now available in the UK.

Droitwich Salt is currently available in the Food Hall at Webbs, Wychbold and also at Webbs, West Hagley
