A safer way to feed your garden birds
You may have seen recent guidance in thew news about "feeding seasonallu and feeding safely." It's a helpful reminder that looking after garden birds means keeping them healthy as well as well-fed.
The good news is that feeding birds is perfectly safe when it's done with a bit of care. The main things to watch out for are unclean feeders and too many birds crowding into one spot.
Here are some simple ways to keep your feathered visitors safe and happy:
-
Give your feeders and the ground beneath them a clean once a week to help stop disease spreading.
-
Use a mild disinfectant, and rinse everything well before adding fresh food.
-
Put out small amounts of food, topping up little and often.
-
Change water in bird baths and dishes every day, especially during warm weather.
-
Spread feeders around your garden to give birds more space.
In our garden centres we are a wide range of bird feeders that have quick release bases allowing for easy cleaning and most are labelled with hygiene instructions.
